Portrait of Sara Kaufman

The Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) at the University of Pittsburgh has established a colloquium series as part of its 60th anniversary commemorations.

The events will feature distinguished speakers from a variety of disciplines, bringing unique perspectives on timely topics. Anyone in the Pitt community is welcome to attend.

The first speaker in the series is Sara Rimm-Kaufman (pictured), the Commonwealth Professor of Education at the University of Virginia (UVA). Her talk will be held at 10:15 a.m. Feb. 3 at the LRDC, in Murdoch Building 434, 3420 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA, 15213.

Rimm-Kaufman studies systematic ways that classroom social and psychological experiences are productive (or not productive) environments for child and youth development. She is the author of two books, seven book chapters and more than 100 journal articles on social and emotional learning in schools. She also directs of the Social Development Lab, located within the UVA School of Education and Human Development and the Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL). CASTL is an interdisciplinary research center that aims to advance the quality of teaching and learning, from infancy to higher education.

Stephen Hutt, assistant professor of Computer Science at the University of Denver will speak on April 7. Hutt studies how AI techniques can be used to improve educational software and experiences, with a special focus on the fair treatment of students who are members of underrepresented groups. His talk is co-sponsored by the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems in Pitt’s School of Computing and Information. Stay tuned for more information on timing and location.
