Using findings from an independent safety study of the De Soto/Terrace corridor, the City of Pittsburgh determined that it is no longer legal to cross Terrace Street directly in front of the new Scaife Hall entrance.
Additional recent changes by the city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) in the De Soto/Terrace Street corridor by the Petersen Events Center, UPMC Presbyterian and Alan Magee Scaife Hall include:
- Remove the crosswalk at Terrace Street at Sutherland Drive. In early April, DOMI will remove the curb ramps and detectable warnings from this defunct crosswalk and install new ones on the crosswalk pedestrians are supposed to use — Terrace Street at Lothrop Street, about 25 feet down the street.
- Relocate the Terrace Street southbound approach stop sign from Sutherland Drive to Lothrop Street.
- Install a “stop ahead” warning sign in advance of relocated stop sign for southbound Terrace Street at Lothrop Street.
- Install “all way” stop plaques at Terrace Street at Lothrop Street and a “cross traffic does not stop” plaque to the Sutherland Drive stop sign at Terrace Street.
- Update pedestrian warning signage at the Terrace Street midblock crossing.
- Update parking regulation signage for Terrace Street from Sutherland Drive to De Soto Street.
While Pitt does not control city streets, the University is committed to making Oakland a safer place for pedestrians, cyclists and commuters. Pitt is working with stakeholders, including the city and UPMC, to improve safety in the Pittsburgh neighborhood.
Pedestrians should always use legal crosswalks and be aware of changing traffic patterns when traveling across campus. Those in vehicles should be alert for pedestrians and cyclists and always allow for extra travel time. If you experience an emergency, contact Pitt Police at 412-624-2121.
