Now, it’s opening its doors to even more students eager to chart their own paths in public policy.
March 20 marks a new season — and new name — for Pitt’s School of Public and International Affairs, reflecting the school’s commitment to welcoming and preparing students at every stage of their academic and professional journey. While graduate programs will continue their legacy of excellence, this evolution ensures undergraduates will also find a home at the school.
“We’ve found that undergraduate students are increasingly motivated by opportunities in public and international affairs,” said Dean Carissa Slotterback. “By engaging with students earlier, we’re helping them build the foundational skills of leadership and public service that are needed now more than ever.”
With the introduction of a new Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy, the school’s experienced faculty will guide students as they engage with critical policy issues, develop essential skills and step into leadership roles that make a difference in their communities and beyond. Minors in public policy and global policy will equip undergraduate students from around the University with the skills and perspective to tackle today’s most pressing challenges.
The Policy and Social Impact Fellows Program, launched in October 2023, offers students from varied disciplines, class years and academic backgrounds an immersive experience that connects them with hands-on projects, expert mentorship and real-world policy work. Whether they’re exploring policy for the first time or preparing for a career in public service, there is a place for students to grow, lead and make a difference in the School of Public and International Affairs.
“This is not just a name evolution — it’s a milestone in our journey,” Slotterback said. “We embrace a future that expands our mission, deepens our impact and invites even more students to shape the world with us.”
Pitt’s School of Public and International Affairs is recognized as among the best in the nation — including being named No. 1 among public universities for international and global policy in 2024. U.S. News and World Report also ranked the school highly for urban policy (No. 16), public policy analysis (No. 31) and public affairs (No. 34). Led by experienced researchers with a focus on hands-on learning, 96% of public and international affairs students are employed or pursuing further study within six months of graduation.
