Join the Tradition: Sing ‘Sweet Caroline’ Together

Attention graduates: Now’s your chance to sing “Sweet Caroline” at commencement. Record a brief clip of you and your Pitt friends singing the tune and submit it for inclusion in the Class of 2021 commencement ceremonies.

The resulting videos will be played near the end of all in-person commencement ceremonies and streamed on Pitt’s YouTube channel.

You must use the Pitt Band instrumental as your background music. Any other version of “Sweet Caroline” playing in the background will not be accepted. Recordings in which participants do not appear to follow Pitt’s health rules or with poor audio or video quality will not be included in the final commencement video.

Tips for recording:

  • If you’re recording in person, you should be alone or with one or two others, not a large group.
  • If you want to include a large group or student organization, set up a Zoom meeting and record.
  • Recordings may be done unmasked as long as you’re in your room or apartment and with no more than two roommates or close contacts.
  • Filming on a horizontal mobile phone works best, but a computer webcam will also work.
  • Use one device for playing the Pitt Band music so you can sing along and record with a second device.
  • Make sure to capture the video horizontally (turn your phone sideways), not vertically.
  • Make sure the light sources (windows, lamps, etc.) are in front of you, not behind you.
  • Be mindful of what is around you when filming.

How to submit your video for inclusion:

  1. Go to wetransfer.com and upload your file.
  2. Then send it to pitt [at] theawesomefilms.com with “Sweet Caroline video” in the subject line.
  3. You will receive a “thank you for submitting email” once the video is received.
