Applications Now Open for Panthers Forward

For the third consecutive year, the University of Pittsburgh will select 150 students to participate in the Panthers Forward program—an innovative initiative that leverages the power of our University community to ease the burden of student loan debt.

Throughout the year, Panthers Forward students enjoy mentoring opportunities with Pitt alumni, life-skills programming and invitations to special events. Shortly after participants graduate, the University will apply up to $5,000 directly to their federal loan balance.

To be eligible, students must be seniors on the Pittsburgh campus in good standing with the University and must have taken out federal loans to fund their senior year. Applications will open Wednesday, Aug. 19 and must be submitted by Sunday, Sept. 20. Students can apply online.

“This program is unique to Pitt and benefits participants in more ways than just helping to reduce their student loan debt,” said Panthers Forward Director Sarah Webb. “What really makes the program unique is how focused we are on building community, imparting critical life skills and providing opportunities for students to network with Pitt alumni who share their knowledge and experience.”

Throughout the 2020-21 academic year, Panthers Forward students will be matched with an alumni mentor who will meet with them monthly to discuss topics related to planning for future success. The students are also expected to participate in two life skills symposia that focus on preparing for careers or graduate school. It is anticipated that these meetings and events will be held virtually for the coming academic year.

The only condition for participants is a voluntary one—that they pay it forward. Graduates of the program are encouraged to stay connected by attending events, including a welcome reception in the fall and graduation celebration at the end of the school year. Panthers Forward alumni are also encouraged to give back to the program when they give to Pitt.
